The Match Committee in addressing the feedback from Members on the sole use of Black Tees during monthly stroke rounds have trialed mixed tee competitions.
The multi tee trial was driven by members feedback and is becoming increasingly normal across the industry. The multi tee format allows players to select the tee box, which best suits their skill level or enjoyment. The course is rated to provide a slope rating that will adjust their handicap accordingly.
The World Handicap System Regulations, under which Golf Australia and Golf WA operate, stipulates the Handicap process for mixed tee competitions.
The trial commenced on Wednesday the 15th January and concluded on Saturday 22nd February. Competitions of stableford, par and stroke were played off black and blue tees, with members required to register their preferred tee box. The Miscore app identified the members preference, adjusted the daily handicap accordingly and highlighted the chosen tee on the score panel for each hole.
During the trial members have made their preference clear. Selection of black tees has been as low as 3% of the field, to a high of 38% of the field. Generally, over the period of the trial the selection of black tees hovered between 10% to 24% of the field.
Given the limited number of members selecting black tees, it was difficult to identify any bias in winners on the day. The greater number of members selecting blue tees, on average between 76% to 90% resulted in players off black winning twice or 15%, which is reflective of the percentage of members who selected black tees. (10% to 24%).
The Match Committee sanctioned by the Board have made the decision that multi tee competitions will be played during the 2025 season. Initially these multi tee competitions will be played during Wednesday and Saturday men’s competitions, from Blue and Black tees.
The Match Committee are committed to increasing Members longevity in the game whilst also providing a positive and enjoyable experience. The choice of tees provides members with the option of playing the course to their skill set, hopefully enjoying their round of golf or testing their game where they feel the desire.
Kind Regards
Match Committee
