Final Wrap for 2023 Mens’ Senior 4BBB Pennant Season
After six rounds of the 4BBB Senior Pennant season our two MGGC teams finished with victories in both the South White and South Black divisions.
It’s just like getting a birdie (or even a par) on the 18th hole, but instead of looking at that effort “bringing you back next week” the 4BBB lads will have to wait until 2024 for redemption.
There were certainly some incentives for the two teams leading into last Tuesday’s final games for 2023 with South White needing to secure a win over Secret Harbour to lift them into third position on the table, and in doing so relegate Secret Harbour to the bottom.
They achieved that following a decisive 4:1 win, finishing with 3 points, one in front of the windy coastal club after recording a draw with Royal Fremantle in Round 2.
4&3 wins by Derrick McCloskey/David Ball and Parry Kahlon/Ric Moore paved the way for the 4:1 victory with Bruce Chatfield/Jim Clayton and Fred Armstrong/Joe Vergone sealing the Match with 4&2 and 1 Up wins respectively.
Finals take place next Monday with the South White Division winner Royal Perth up against Lake Karrinyup at the neutral venue of either Nedlands, Sea View or Rockingham.
It was more a ‘spoiler’ victory for MGGC South Black as they took on Hartfield with the final decider on which team takes on the North Black Division winner Lakelands next Monday at either Nedlands or Rockingham.
With three clubs going into the Round locked together on 6 points and with Sea View gaining a victory over Gosnells the Monday prior, MGGC’s performance on Tuesday would decide whether Hartfield or Sea View would secure the finals berth.
Hartfield needed to beat MGGC by at least 3:2 getting the two points to tie with Sea View, and if that score or better was the outcome, then Hartfield would be elevated to the final on the number of Matches won.
But a par on hole #17 by Dean King put paid to any celebrations Hartfield may have had as this partnership with Selwyn Poi (2&1) gave MGGC South Black a 3:2 win, which by all accounts means Sea View owes MGGC South Black players quite a few beers!
Dean and Selwyn were supported by Frank Starkey/Allan van Der Brughhen winning 4&3 with Chris Jackson/Don Hitchcock defeating their Hartfield opponents 1 Up.
With our two sides finally making winning “look easy” in the final round, it was a shame the season wasn’t over a longer period than six weeks, but as they say, “There’s always next year”. Bring it on!
Ends – 25 May 2023.
