My communiques in 2023 have been somewhat sparse which is a good thing as it means Lady Captain Lynda via her Blogs and Vice-Captain Anne via the Clubhouse screen having been keeping all Women Members up to date with all matters golf.
That said, there are just a few items that come to mind which may be of interest to some of you.
Firstly, the topic of “Women’s Dress Code” was discussed at our most recent committee meeting. For some time now our Dress Code has been out of step with current trends. Fashion evolution makes absolute guidelines impossible and based on feedback from several female members we believe the Club’s dress code needs to be reviewed/revamped with a more “generic” dress code being considered especially when it comes to “Golf Attire”. This is a work in progress that will ultimately become a Board decision upon presentation of a formal proposal for a change to the wording of the Club’s dress regulations.
Next week the notice of the 55th Ladies Annual Meeting (LAM) will be issued. This is the time of year that we will be looking for nominees to join our vibrant Committee.
Please think about helping out in some capacity as you will come to realise that it is not as arduous or time-consuming as you may think, and your input will be greatly appreciated.
The Ladies Match Committee have been discussing how we could potentially be more inclusive in our fixturing to better cater for our “weekend only” ladies. With 7 day playing rights being in effect for several years now we need to revisit how we go about scheduling some of our events to afford the weekend ladies the opportunity to participate in more competitions. A few ideas have been mooted and will be presented at the LAM for feedback. We need to continue to evolve as a membership group. Look how well we have accommodated our 9-hole ladies. We need to do this for our weekend only ladies as well!
Next item on my list is the Member Forum being held to discuss the Club’s Governance Structure. You may well be asking – Why??? Part of good governance is to periodically examine and review the current Board and Committee structure to better ensure its overall sustainability. A lock and leave mentality is not best practice. MGGC’s last major review was 20+ years ago and only one significant change has been made to the structure in that time (namely, the DLM position was implemented in 2011). The Club has changed in many ways over the last 20+ years and hence it is time to continue the conversation about this important aspect of our Club.
Have you looked at the Club’s history archive yet? It is well worth a look. A lot of hard work has been done (and I really mean a lot of hard work!!!!)…mainly by Frank and Julie Davies…to create a database which all members past and present can access to view a huge amount of information pertaining to MGGC.
Melville Glades history archive is now online courtesy of Collections WA. All you need to do is login to the Club’s website, click on the History & Governance header and select History. You will see the Collections WA link, click on that, and start navigating your way through topics that may be of interest to you.
That’s it from me for now…keep enjoying your golf game whilst the course staff carry out phase 2 of our 3-phase green replacement program. Summer of 2024 will be here before we know it and Poa Annua greens will be a thing of the past.
Cheers
